The designer - Desak Nyoman Suarti
Desak Nyoman Suarti was born during the religious festival celebrating the birth of Saraswati and is named after this goddess of art and knowledge. Aptly so, for she has dedicated her life to the native arts of Bali.
Originally trained in dance, Suarti gained worldwide recognition as a performer and teacher in this discipline before becoming involved in the visual arts of painting and design, going on to become the first Balinese woman to have a solo exhibition of her work.
Later, Suarti turned to jewellery and in 1990 began producing her own range - The Suarti Collection - soon becoming the first Indonesian designer to achieve international fame and media celebrity.
Inspired by the beauty and culture of her island home, Suarti's designs celebrate the rhythm and movement of Bali's music and dance, the patterns of nature, traditional symbolism and architectural motifs.
"The Balinese believe that all elements of your life are woven together, I try to represent that in my designs," Suarti explains, "The island of Bali is a constant source of inspiration. My jewellery speaks of a kinship that only a native Indonesian can have."
We may not all share that kinship but, throughout the world, Suarti's creations are renowned and treasured for their exquisite design, style and quality; each piece a testament to the skills of the Bali craftsmen and the culture of her island home.
Through her jewellery Suarti provides an important economic boost to local communities giving employment to more than four hundred workers but her support for her native culture goes further. She is an accomplished musician and founded one of the first women's gamelan orchestras in Bali. She helps promote young composers, performers and artists, has built art centres, and is an important supporter of conservation programmes and cultural foundations on the island.
